The Windham Regional Community Council created the “Positive Steps Garden” in the spring of 2012. The garden was created by students from Windham Youth Services’ “Positive Steps” Program, with support from GROW Windham and volunteers from ECSU and Teach for America. The garden has flourished through the generous support from the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, and donations from Kyle Stearns, Burrell Brothers, and True Value Hardware.
The purpose of the garden was to renovate a vacant lot and to create educational opportunities for students. The Positive Steps Garden serves as an opportunity for an outdoor activity, learning about health, cooking, nutrition, gardening, and ecology. The volunteers created a mural that symbolizes how much the garden means to the community, and the “Fruggie Mobile Vegetable Cart”, from which they sold recipe kits with produce from the garden attached to recipes for how to prepare them.
With the end of the Positive Steps Program, GROW Windham’s Youth CORE has taken over maintenance of the space.
